is an audio-visual contemplation, meant to be experienced in a dark, quiet room, on a large screen with a surround-sound system or headphones, and with a multi-touch panel for input.

monad was initially conceived as an experiment with space, wherein at the very moment that the player engaged with the system, a white circle began to grow, unrestrained, until it occupied the entire screen, the entire space.  Leaving no room for agency.

The black circle came about as a means for the player to regain space.  The soundscape came about in order to give more dimension to the feelings that the visuals were already evoking.

monad is made with LÖVE, with help and support from that community as well as Louisville Makes Games.  It was first exhibited at the Indie Games and Art Social during the AIGA Design week in September 2018.

monad was recently presented at Bit Bash 2019 at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry, and won first place in the "Physical Interactive Art" category at the Kentucky State Fair's Design Web Digital and Interactive Art exhibit.

monad was most recently present at EGX 2019 as part of the Leftfield Collection.

I feel that the algorithm is not too complicated, yet visual quality is excellent!

I'm so fascinated with this game! So simple in concept, beautifully executed. When I touch and create the circles, the sounds make them feel as if they were three-dimensional things I placed down. It felt like I was surrounded yet fully aware that these were just growing black and white circles. I'm happy I downloaded it.

Thank you for the kind words and thank you so much for playing!  It makes me really happy to know when people have a meaningful experience with something I make.
